TAPDESIGN

After years of city living, the clients recently purchased their first suburban home in Harrison, NY. As daily cooks, they missed the highly efficient layout and modern appointments of their Brooklyn kitchen.

At the same time, they felt claustrophobic in the dark, enclosed kitchen and had trouble functioning in the elongated layout of the kitchen. The owners sought the opportunity to live and entertain in an open concept layout while respecting the period feel of traditional mid-century cape and creating an architectural balance. They also requested that the space accommodate many of their existing furniture pieces. All of the owners requests were met while staying within the very tight budget.

The interior finishes were selected to provide a warm and contemporary feel within a traditional home. The palette is classic and enhances the abundant natural light which had been diminished by the original layout. The soapstone countertops add warmth and balance to the palette and are a classic and underused material. The pendant lighting is custom and strikes a balance between traditional and contemporary.
