TAPDESIGN

Patience is a virtue; after numerous prospective house visits and years of searching for a forever home, the clients found what they could transform into the visions and memories they had of their native apartment in Brazil.

They desired clean lines and simplicity – modern/contemporary architecture. The existing kitchen was anything but, with its traditional doors and cabinets and 1980s style floor and backsplash. However, the bones of the home supported the design vision.

The design called for a complete gut of the space. Taking advantage of additional ceiling height formed from the cavity of the existing ceiling framing helped create the open concept feel the owners were seeking.

By removing the structural wall between the existing kitchen and dining room, the new layout provided a more modern approach to entertaining and celebrating food in the open plan. Enlarging the window and removing the portion of ceiling that followed the existing gable roofline opened up the end of the kitchen to provide additional natural light to the space. Incorporating a large and accessible pantry into the design allowed for a reduced cabinet layout – further enhancing the light feel. The flexibility and functionality of the space allow for large gatherings, and the accented island top provides the perfect focal point and ample space for entertaining.

The clients are ecstatic with the design and we all celebrated together by gathering for dinner with friends and colleagues in the newly created modern kitchen.
